On November 30th, 1970, Tennessee and Johnny Wester were blessed with their 1st child and only son, Dwayne Christopher Wester. Dwayne’syounger sister, Lisa was born 10 months later, and both were raised in Seattle, Washington.
Dwayne was a child of Seattle’s strong Pentecostal Heritage. He began his primary education at Rainier Valley Christian School, where the family also attended Northwest Evangelistic Center led by Reverend H.L. Wood. He would later attend Wing Luke elementary, Denny Middle School, Chief Sealth, and Rainier Beach
High schools to complete his formative years.
Dwayne had a Levitical Worship anointing from a youthful age. Our ‘Son of Zion’ built his first drum-set with his mother’s lamp shades as symbols, stacked books for drum heads, and hangers for drumsticks. Dwayne was an uncanny musical genius at an incredibly young age, and would take every opportunity to beat his “drum-set” while music was played in the home. His drumming skills and musical ear were refined under the tutelage of Pastor Felix Williams, JoJo Williams, and former Youth Pastor David Bowman.
By the age of 7, there was no stopping Dwayne’s musical calling. During this time, his parents Johnny and Tennessee Wester purchased another home, and relocated to the Beacon Hill community. Dwayne began learning to play the organ, and as a young organist led worship services under the direction of Min. William Jones at Jesus Holiness Pentecostal Church (Lead Pastors Larry and Frances Evans).
Dwayne’s natural ear for music was prolific! He could play various musical instruments with a high degree of expertise: keyboards, drums, guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, and not long ago... the “talk-box”. Dwayne’s musical sound was a distinctive expression of God’s heart, and transcended the boundaries of traditional church. He quickly adopted and influenced the sound of Seattle’s Worship; from Baptist to Pentecostal, from COGIC to Methodist. There was not a church-house that Dwayne did not share his musical gift.
Dwayne was a songwriter, who lent his talent to many different artists. The first band he played with was, “Inside Moves”, another was “Acapulco Gold”, and an endless list of groups and individuals he performed with in studios, and at various locations around the city. He composed and recorded fifteen songs with Lady Kimberly Sopher-Dunn, Pastor Scipio Dunn, and his group PURE, completing a full Gospel recording and film project in May 2021.
Dwayne most recently attended, and was a Minister of music at Holly Park Community Church led by Pastor Otis Brown. He also served as a major musical support at New Birth Ministries COGIC (Sr. Pastor Maynard G. Sopher and Pastor Scipio Dunn), and True Vine of Holiness MBC Church Pastor Lawrence Willis. Also, after his morning worship service he diligently served as a musician for six months at Into His Chambers Global International Ministries (Apostle Helen Saddler).
Dwayne’s gifts extended well beyond music. He had the unique ability to befriend nearly everyone he came in contact with. His endearing smile and INFECTIOUS laugh would not only light up a room, but fill it up as well. Affectionately known as “D”, Dwayne gained the trust of countless people by just being himself. He also had a knack for making everyone he knew, feel like his best friend.
Dwayne was a hard, diligent worker for the City of Seattle for nearly 30 years. Throughout his time with the city, he was given continued responsibility and worked his way up to Lead, for a crew who depended on his expertise daily to complete their jobs. Of late, Dwayne was in training to become a Baliff for the District court of Seattle.
Dwayne will be remembered as a man with the utmost integrity. He was a man of his word-- if there was time in the day to do it, he was going to get it done! He was a caring, devoted Son to his mom; a loving Brother (& best friend) to his sister; and faithful Uncle to his niece. All while being a loyal, trustworthy cousin, nephew and friend.
On January 2, 2022, Dwayne Christopher Wester went from labor to reward. Dwayne leaves behind his loving mother Tennessee Wester; his treasured sister Lisa Wester; his beloved niece Leahshawn B. Wester; his former wife, Morgana Rauls; his two stepchildren Tatiana and Isaiah; forty-three first cousins (Zella Mae Daniels-Wester /George Wester Sr.’s Grandkids); and a host of dear friends, & musical brothers and sisters.
